COMMENT SERIES [PART-1]
If you have known me personally, I tend to be vocal about things I support and often get into scuffle with people who thinks otherwise. In real life, if there is a disagreement, I try to think from their point of view and will conclude my opinion based on the facts which were shared among ourselves. Even though, there won't be much of a compromise of ideologies on both side, the points were made, the other parties were civil and everything else was well and good.
But when it comes to clash of opinion on Internet, it is a whole different stories. People often be rude and impolite just because they have the power to hide behind fake accounts. This anonymousness gave them a superiority boost and thus the reason why so many troll and hate accounts exist in the first place. I am going to go through several accounts and comments, dissect them and gave my opinion about what is wrong with them.
I saw the above comment in a random Instagram comment and I have been meaning to talk about it. This comment is also featured in an anti-feminist page and it left me wondering, "Does people even know what feminism about or they just decided to be an hater?"
Feminism is fighting against the odds of patriarchy and finding an equal footing for everyone out there. It majorly focuses on women's problem in the society as they have been the main victim of patriarchy. The above posts mention that men are more likely to end their own life. Why they do so? Because of the patriarchy system that they decided to support.
The patriarchy which looks down on women is the same patriarchy which puts men on a pedestal. No feminist ever said that men needs to be strong, they should be the provider or should not have any weaknesses. Men's mental health is often over looked upon people around them, even those who are close to them, simply because they are men. It should not be something one should be ashamed of. Mental health issues are real and valid. People have been suffering over these issues all these decades. Just because people didn't acknowledge, doesn't mean it's presence from the past could be erased.
The same page which cries about men dying and suicide rate, would ask men to toughen up if they ever opened about their issues. They same page would call men weak, if they ever cried talking how distressing life have been for them. Again they need a reason to hate, they won't like the solution even if it were handed to them on a platter. The patriarchy is the one which denied you the basic rights of a human being. We both are fighting the same system, then why were we always shaming feminists?
The fatality and war death of men were high, because women were not deemed to be "strong enough" to fight in the war as per the system back then. But erasing women's contribution in war isn't something I would pass on. Why are they only counting the men to women ratio on the fields which are favourable to them? What about all other field like law, medical and others where womens enrolment percentage were too low because those are considered as male dominated field?
The one about parental custody, I won't say men were not capable of raising children. Because I have seen a lot of single fathers and queer parents raise their children with ease and without having a need of female figure. Have they ever thought some were denied custody due to external factors like whether the child has any conditions or need to breast fed, or the father have not enough means? If the father is denied custody even after meeting all the requirements then the problem should be with judicial system not the feminist.
I don't know where they dug up the statistics from, but according to Liberating Motherhood it states that " In 91% of custody cases, the parents mutually decide to give custody to the mother. Fathers fight for custody in court in less than 4% of divorces. Twenty-seven percent of fathers completely abandon their children after divorce." And I would like to leave it at that.
See, the fight should not be between feminism and people against it. It should be against the patriarchy. The concept of feminism is people shouldn't be treated different just because of their gender. For the people saying the society has always been that way and it's the way it works, I just wanna rely that if we don't change, nothing ever changes itself.
